developmental disabilities awareness month 2022

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is observed annually in March to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in their communities.

According to a Child Trends report (2020), children and youth with special health care needs enter the foster care system at higher rates than their peers without special health care needs and tend to have different experiences within the system.

A researcher at the University of California, Davis, investigated the maltreatment profiles of child welfare-involved children in special education and presented the findings in a recent policy brief, Welfare-Involved Children in Special Education Most Likely to Suffer Supervisory Neglect. This research was featured in this month’s Children’s Bureau Express alert.
